PRESS RELEASE: From the Office of Cong. Roman T. Romulo

Romulo urges bicameral compromise on SSL 

Pasig Rep. Roman Romulo today said a compromise should be reached soon by the bicameral conference committee to ensure the passage of the Salary Standardization Law (SSL-4) which would hike the compensation of 1.53 million government personnel over a period of four years starting 2016.

"We only have until Wednesday this week to pass the proposed P226-billion increase for government workers. The amount required for the first tranche is already incorporated in the approved budget for this year," he said.

"I am confident that the differences between the House and Senate versions will be bridged. Otherwise our people will be in for another major disappointment," Romulo said.

The disagreement over the passage of the SSL stems from the inclusion in the Senate version of the pension for retired military personnel. The House however did not allocate funds for this in their version of the GAA for 2016 which was approved by Congress and signed by the President.

The Senate has said that any increase in the pension of active service personnel of the PNP and AFP should also be enjoyed by retired personnel. It proposed that funding for this purpose be included in the 2017 budget.

The 2016 budget allocates P57.9 billion for the first tranche of the proposed increase. At least P19 to 21 billion is needed to fund the pension hike for retired military personnel.

"The law increasing the SSS pension of senior citizens was vetoed. The proposed broad-based cut in income taxes was junked. We are now faced with a possible strike out if the SSL-4 is not passed. This puts under question the inclusive growth mantra of this administration," Romulo said.

“Pag-IBIG Fund is the Filipino worker’s fund. Our responsibility is to promote savings and to invest in housing. I am glad that Pag-IBIG Fund, led by President and CEO Atty. Darlene Marie B. Berberabe, kept up with President Aquino’s mandate of Daang Matuwid, with their relentless pursuit of excellence and integrity,” said Atty. Chito M. Cruz, Pag-IBIG Chairman of the Board.

"In 2015, we launched the Loyalty Card Program which gives discounts and privileges from over 90 private sector partners such as up to 50% discount for selected medicines in Pfizer, discounts on LPG from Petron, discounts in educational institutions, and perks from Puregold. There are now over one million Loyalty Cardholders. In the last five years, Pag-IBIG doubled its home loan cap from P 3 million to P 6 million while cutting the interest rate, from 11.5% per annum to as low as 6.5 %, with special rate of 4.5% for minimum wage earners, and reduced its calamity loan by half to 5.95%. Our report focused on the increase in the number of members from the informal sector who previously did not have access to banks, are now proud homeowners because of Pag-IBIG's affordable loans. Now, kasambahays, drivers, security guards can own houses. We also nearly doubled our membership base from 8.7 million in 2010 to 15.9 million now, which means there are more members who contribute to the Fund. For better access to our services, we almost tripled our branch offices from 38 in 2010 to 112 now. All these bigger and better benefits are being enjoyed by our members without increasing the mandatory contribution of 100 pesos per month," Atty. Berberabe shared.

Pag-IBIG remains as one of the most financially sound state-owned corporations. In 2015, it earned a net income of P20.2 billion which is 27 percent higher than 2014. The agency is set to credit as much as P14.14 billion in dividends to members’ accounts, which is 17 percent higher than 2014. With the improvement of its collection platform, the Fund improved its performing loans ratio (PLR) from the lowest PLR of 72 percent to an unprecedented 89.35 percent net of allowance for impairment loss.

The Fund has also been recognized by various award-giving bodies and other government agencies. In 2015, Pag-IBIG was able to maintain its 100% passing rate in the Anti-Red Tape Act (ARTA) survey, after full round of survey, with 30 of its branches rated "Excellent." The Fund received the same ARTA passing rate in 2013 and 2014. The Fund also maintained its Pag-IBIG ISO 9001:2008 Certification, proof that its processes comply with international standards. The agency also received its third “Unqualified Opinion” from the Commission on Audit, a testament to the Fund’s good governance. The Association of Government Accountants of the Philippines (AGAP), Inc. conferred the Most Outstanding Accounting Office Award 2014 to Pag-IBIG while the Fund’s Integrity Pledge initiative has signed more than 250 stakeholders in last few months.

The Jr. NBA /Jr. WNBA Philippines 2016 presented by Alaska will return to the Philippines for the ninth consecutive year from Jan. 23-April 24. The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA program is free and open to boys and girls between the ages of 10-14.

Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA, the league’s global youth basketball participation program for boys and girls, teaches the fundamental skills as well as the core values of the game at the grassroots level in an effort to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches and parents. During the 2015-16 season, the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA program will reach more than 6.5 million youth in 32 countries. 

The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Philippines 2016 presented by Alaska is comprised of four stages: skills clinics in schools and communities, Regional Selection Camps, a National Training Camp and an NBA experience trip. The skills clinics will be held nationwide from January through April with stops in Bukidnon, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Dagupan, Davao, Iloilo, Metro Manila and Puerto Princesa, and first-time locations in Batangas, Catanduanes and Cavite. Select players from these clinics will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in tryouts during the Regional Selection Camps, which will be held in Baguio (Feb. 20-21), Davao (Feb. 27-28), Cebu (March 5-6) and Metro Manila (April 9-10). The top 50 boys and 24 girls from the Regional Selection Camps will advance to the National Training Camp in Manila April 22-24.

An NBA and WNBA player or legend will be in attendance at the National Training Camp to help train and inspire the finalists. The program will culminate with the selection of 10 Jr. NBA and five Jr. WNBA All-Stars who will travel on an overseas NBA experience trip together with fellow Jr. NBA All-Stars from Southeast Asia. The 2015 Jr. NBA All-Stars traveled to China to watch the NBA Global Games in Shenzhen featuring the Charlotte Hornets and the L.A. Clippers.

“The Jr. NBA Philippines is the league’s longest-running youth basketball program outside the United States,” said NBA Philippines Managing Director Carlo Singson. “The program continues to positively impact the lives of children, parents, and coaches, and reinforces the positive values that go beyond the four corners of the court. Star Dome Cosplay Encore 2016 at Star City

Everyone is invited to the event cosplayers and those who just want to watch and enjoy the event on February 13, 2016 just in time for Valentines Day. In cooperation with Naruto Cosplayers PH (NCPH) and Red Cloud Interactive will be bringing cosplay and Japanese music and culture to Star Dome and Star City. mystical creatures come alive.
