MERALCO ADVISORY: Meralco consumers enjoy lower power rates in May





  • Earlier this month, Meralco announced that the rate for its residential customers in May would go down by 41-centavos per kWh, thereby bringing it down to Php 8.44 per kWh.
  • For a typical household consuming 200 kWh, this translates to a reduction of around Php 82.00 in their electricity bill. 
  • This month’s overall rate is lower by Php 1.54 per kWh compared to May 2015’s Php 9.98 per kWh. It is also the lowest since January 2010, or over a period of six years.
  • The decrease in the overall rates was primarily due to the generation charge, which decreased by PhP0.21 per kWh from last month. May’s generation charge is the lowest since October 2004. 
  • Transmission charge likewise registered a decrease of PhP0.10 per kWh due to the reduction in NGCP’s ancillary charges and slight decrease in Power Delivery Service (PDS) charge. 
  • Taxes and Other Charges also decreased by PhP0.10 per kWh following the reduction in generation and transmission charges. 
  • Meralco’s distribution, supply, and metering charges, meanwhile, have remained unchanged for 10 months, after they registered a reduction in July 2015.

Meralco does not earn from the pass-through charges, such as the generation and transmission charges. Payment for the generation charge goes to the power suppliers, while payment for the transmission charge goes to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

 What you pay in your bill also goes to these other components of the electricity supply chain. 

GENERATION CHARGE is the largest component of the bill. It comprises the total of all costs charged by the different generation companies that provide Meralco with power supply. These include San Miguel Corporation, Aboitiz Power, DMCI, First Gen, AES, and EGCO. In special cases, this may include charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

TRANSMISSION CHARGE goes to NGCP. Of course, there are also government taxes and other charges warranted by government regulators to ensure the industry’s viability.  

Instead of each of these entities delivering bills to your doors and collecting payment, Meralco consolidates all charges in one electric bill, before sending it to you. Then, Meralco collects payment and pays the other companies and the government in behalf of its consumers.

DISTRIBUTION CHARGE is the only amount Meralco receives for its services. Distribution charge is not as unpredictable as other charges because it is regulated by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). In fact, the distribution charge decreased last 2014, became even lower last 2015, and has not changed since then.

Jodi and Thirdy the newest brand ambassadors for Jolly Spaghetti

During the media launch held at the Ortigas Roosevelt branch. Jodi and Thirdy, who stars in the latest TV commercial for Jolly Spaghetti, shared their own personal experiences, from happy memories when she was a kid and to how she now enjoys the same bonding moments with Thirdy. The Jolly Spaghetti Sweet-Sarap Moments event also featured fun games for the media guests and their kids.


Jodi confesses to being a certified Batang Jollibee, even before she got into show business. Her mother worked hard to raise Jodi and her siblings, but made sure to devote her Saturdays to quality time over her children’s favorite Jollibee treats. “Every Saturday, iti-treat niya kami sa Jollibee sa may Landmark food court,” Jodi recalled. “Talagang masasabi ko na kinalakihan ko si Jollibee. At hindi lang ‘yon, kasi bawat party, bawat celebration, talagang naging part siya ng family namin at ng pamilyang Pilipino.”

Growing up, Jodi said she would often order Jolly Spaghetti and Jolly Hotdog, and it became staples
in her bonding moments with her mom. Now that she’s a mother herself, she wants to pass on the same joyful experience to Thirdy. The 10-year old loves the cheesy, meaty, and sweet-sarap flavors of Jolly Spaghetti. “Wala akong nakilalang bata na gusto ng maasim na spaghetti,” the actress remarked candidly. “Especially Filipino children. I believe na nakuha ng Jollibee ‘yung manamis-namis na timpla na hinahanap-hanap ng bawat batang Pilipino.”

Jodi admit that she is a Mom first, actress second. She remains simple even with her celebrity status and recent accolades for her stellar TV performances. Despite her busy schedule, she makes sure that spending quality time with Thirdy is her priority, just as her own mother did years ago. The actress related that she and Thirdy can spend hours upon hours just talking about anything, especially over their favorite Jolly Spaghetti. They often order “C3,” the Jolly Spaghetti and Chickenjoy combo, for delivery or drive-thru. “Sa hapagkainan, that’s where the bonding happens. Nakakatuwa si Thirdy when you spend time with him. He’s a very opinionated child. Baka pwede siyang maging lawyer,” Jodi proudly added.

According to Mr. Kent Mariano, Jollibee Assistant Vice President for Marketing, “Jodi and Thirdy are the perfect endorsers for Jolly Spaghetti.  Despite Jodi’s celebrity status and hectic schedule, she believes in making even the smallest of moments count when it comes to strengthening her bond with Thirdy and her family. The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) took part in a Unity Walk held at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City in observance of the Electrical Safety Month. Organized by the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) in cooperation with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the annual event held every May aims to raise public awareness on the significance of electrical safety.

Representing Meralco at the Unity Walk was the Meralco K-Ligtas (Kuryenteng Ligtas) Awards Organizing Committee led by its vice chairman Pol Leoncio and members Capt. Anthony Arroyo of BFP and Eugene Araullo of the Meralco Power Academy. K-Ligtas, the first awards program recognizing institutions with outstanding electrical safety programs and practices, is led by organizations who advocate electrical safety, namely, IIEE, BFP, UP College of Engineering, Department of Labor and Employment - Occupational Safety and Health Center, and Professional Regulation Commission-Board of Electrical Engineering.

Meralco fully supports initiatives that educate consumers on the proper use of appliances and gadgets so as to prevent and avoid accidents, as aptly reflected in the Unity Walk’s slogan “Electrical Safety Starts with Me.” The country’s largest power utility firm also encourages colleagues in the power industry to make safety a priority.

Inventor, Scholar

Inspired by those who have limited access to electricity, he developed an innovation that converts foot pressure into energy. Angelo’s in-sole power generator gives new meaning to the term “power walk” – slipping the deceptively simple device under a shoe sole can turn an ordinary speaker into a power bank to light up LED lamps and charge mobile devices. This invention was accepted into Google’s 2014 Science Fair, a gathering of the world’s brightest young minds.

Last year, he has also received buzz from international tech magazines for his latest project, the life-sized replica of Star Wars. The Force Awakens lovable droid BB-8 made completely out of household materials.

Now a Physics major at De La Salle University, Angelo continues to tinker and explore to find solutions to pressing social problems. Like any teenager, he’s also using his passion for the sciences for fun, and as a way to encourage his peers to embrace curiosity and ingenuity in their daily lives.

Poet, Spoken Word Artist

In an time of hugot or stories of love and heartbreak, an intense spoken word performance titled “Ang Huling Tula na Isusulat ko Para Sayo” by Juan Miguel Severo went viral online, amassing millions of views and shares and inspiring many not only to appreciate the overlooked art of spoken word, but of the Tagalog language.

Juan Miguel soon rose to mainstream fame through his recurring role in the hit teleserye On the Wings of Love. Initially cast as a background character, the job proved Juan Miguel’s initial fears wrong – that he was too ordinary to be noticed from a sea of aspiring actors.

Juan Miguel loves telling stories, which encouraged him to become a better writer, performer, and actor Crafting rhymes and connecting to metaphors enabled him to explore the emotions behind his own experiences, but also to emphathize to the people surrounding him. Storytelling made him more compassionate, understanding, and accepting of other people and the world at large.

Aside from delivering emotionally charged spoken word performances to jam-packed cafes and bars, Juan Miguel’s words reach thousands of young Pinoys going through the pains and joys of modern love and life through his popular social media accounts.

Model, Agricultural Entrepreneur

The period between high school and college is a confusing yet critical time for any teenager, even for young agricultural entrepreneur Jairus Ferrer. Unsure of what field to study in college, Jairus took a gap year to find himself. He signed up for a four-month agricultural course in his native Bukidnon and discovered what he really wanted to do: farming.

The young entrepreneur co-founded Pronic Foods, an enterprise that channels the logistics and distribution of niche products, such as Cenyu Probiotic Chicken. Together with his team, Jairus was instrumental in creating an urban market for Bukidnon’s premium coffee products.

Jairus’ true fulfillment comes from knowing that consumers appreciate the devotion and detail that go into his livestock and crops. He hopes that tech innovations can connect the younger generation to agriculture and inspire more millennials like him to engage in farming and food production.

He is also a prominent member of the reforestation group Hinelaban Foundation, which aims to restore the lush rainforests in Mindanao and create livelihood programs for locals and indigenous people through transformational business partnerships.

Record-Breaking Runner

As Meagey Ninura, a student-athlete from Davao del Sur’s Capatagan National High School, enthan just the gold medal. She surpassed the 36-year record set by Rosalinda Catulong in the 1980 National Open by 5.6 solid seconds. Considered to be one of the fastest women in the country, Meagey posted a record-breaking time of 10 minutes, 3.4 seconds for a 3000-meter stretch. Shattering Meagey’s record could, once again, take decades.

The lass from Davao wasn’t always a winner, in fact, she spent many important track meets lagging behind faster competitors and failing to secure a medal. Instead of being demoralized by her losses, Meagey used every defeat as her motivation to train harder and run faster. The future indeed looks bright for the 16-year-old sprinter, who wishes to clinch an athletic scholarship from a prominent university.

Outstanding Student

Nothing can stop Christopher Valentin from pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor to help his fellow Filipinos – not even poverty. He received a full scholarship from the Far Eastern University (FEU) to study Psychology as his pre-med course. However, a full ride is not enough to pay for the day-to-day expenses of a college student. To make ends meet, Christopher sold customized t-shirts to his classmates and peers, tutored fellow students, and transcribed data for a drug company.

He graduated Summa cum Laude from FEU, which became his ticket to a tuition-free medicine degree. Aside from doing well in his studies, he was also part of the FEU Tamaraw Volunteers and the Gerry Roxas Leadership Awardee Students Society, which strengthened his affinity for those in need of opportunities for a better future.

The soon-to-be doctor believes that good health should not be a privilege and that every Filipino has a right to it. In the future, Christopher dreams of making quality health care services more accessible to the urban poor.

It’s not easy to get thousands of poker-faced Britons rise from their seats and dance along to a pop tune, but when Fourth Impact – a pop ensemble of four sisters from Santiago City, Isabela – came on the audition stage of the Britain X Factor, they conquered London’s Wembley Stadium.

Almira (28), Irene (26), Mylene (24), and Celina (20) Cercado are veterans of local singing contests and have represented the country in the World Championships of Performing Arts. However, their pop dream remained elusive in the Philippines, propelling them to join the popular South Korean talent show, Superstar K6. The first Filipino to win a European formula race, Marlon sped through the circuits of Formula BMW Europe, Formula Renault UK, the GP3 Series, and until 2015, the Formula Renault 3.5 Series. The Filipino-Swiss racer also won titles from the Asian Karting Championship, the Philippine Shell Super Karting Series, and the Senior Rotax Max World Finals, among other. He is currently racing with the Team ISR for the 2016 MS Blancplain GT Series and is gunning for faster track times to share his victory with every Pinoy who aspires to live their dreams.
