Most Filipinos love beauty pageant. So I got excited when I was invited on August 8, 2017 to attend the press presentation of Mr. and Ms. Chinatown. It was held at Solaire Eclipse Bar. Chinoy TV, Miss Chinatown Foundation, and Oriental Group present Mr. and Ms. Chinatown 2017 in cooperation with co-presenters Solaire Resort and Casino and Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc.
Fil-Chi Media Productions Incorporated is the company behind the premier Chinese-Filipino lifestyle magazine show, Chinoy TV, which features Chinese heritage and how it harmonizes with the Filipino culture. It is committed to promote both cultures by highlighting the Chinese-Filipino lifestyle to its viewers and is the only show that caters directly to the community. While the Miss Chinatown Foundation was created primarily to promote awareness among the Filipino Chinese community about the beauty and richness of the Chinese culture and its language. The foundation also has an advocacy to aid those in need by way of activities promoting education, health and wellness.
It is for such cause that Chinoy TV, together with the Miss Chinatown Foundation, ensures that the pageant transpires yearly until it becomes stitched in the very DNA of the Chinese-Filipino community. Every year since its creation in 2013, Mr. and Miss Chinatown, through the different themes and new set of candidates, highlights the different aspect of the Chinoy. This year’s theme is #NewDynasty which aims to focus on Chinoy millennials. Millennials are the young, innovative, creative, ready to try new things and embodying both Filipino and Chinese values. Mr. and Ms. Chinatown: New Dynasty is anchored on the belief that the modern Chinoy is open-minded and ready to brave change and new heights.
What sets Mr. and Ms. Chinatown apart, however, is that it is the Chinoy culture that it puts in the limelight. More than finding ambassadors who possess the Chinoy brand of beauty and excellence, this pageant aims to strengthen Filipino and Chinese relations, as well as the fusion of the modern and traditional customs. Most of all, Mr. and Ms. Chinatown advocates the pride in the Chinoy heritage. Now, the overwhelming support it has gotten through the years, particularly during the 2016 edition, led the organizer to once again take on this mission with a bigger and bolder vision.
At the presscon, the candidates introduced themselves both in Mandarin and English. Then member of the media test some of them through the question and answer portion. After that the media chose the Darling of the Press. Candidate #15, JOY WU from Davao and Candidate #5, JACOB MUNEZ, a former US Army officer who are both are good looking and who gave witty answers were chosen to be the press’s darling.
